The nuclear renaissance which everyone predicted (including me) four years ago has fizzled like the Comet Kohoutek. (Remember - it was the comet of the century - not.)
Energy Department Announces New Investments in Advanced Nuclear Power Reactors tells the government is investing in four projects.
General Atomics, Ge Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Gen4 Energy, and Westinghouse Electric all have been awarded different projects to advance the state of the art.
Despite the immediate prospects for nuclear power looking dim, I consider this an example of where government should be investing. Private industry is shying away from anything with a return of investment greater than three years. The technology would not be there if we needed it if the government did not invest in it. This is an example of where the government should invest - big science or risky technology not understood.
