Fantasy World Fueled by Sex and Drugs describes Amanda Knox's life in Italy. It reads like a racy version of Sex in the City. Post-modernists declare the lifestyle as liberated and uninhibited. There was only one problem - Meredith Kercher was dead. Justice required a trial and last week, Amanda Knox was declared guilty by an Italian jury.
As Allegations Continue, Fallout Continues for Tiger Woods describes the golf great's personal disaster. Tiger's Reputation Lost in the Rough educated me on new golf metaphors.
These two have something in common with King David. Yes, the ancient Jewish King, who happened to be strolling on top of his castle when he should have been with his army. Because he wasn't where he should have been, he spotted the lovely Bathsheba, and soon entangled himself with adultery and murder. The lesson is pretty simple - be where you are supposed to be, and not where you shouldn't be. That doesn't mean trouble cannot find us where we are supposed to be, but a corollary to this rule is : never go looking for trouble.
What comes next has always troubled me. Wiki describes justice as the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, fairness, or equity. The American statue of Lady Justice embodies three symbols - a sword, a scale for weighing claims, and a blindfold.
But I don't seek justice - I seek mercy. Wiki explains that mercy is leniency or unwarranted compassion. Recall Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, "The quality of mercy ... is mightiest in the mightiest ..." The tip of the Sword of Mercy was broken by an angel to prevent a wrongful killing.
But could society exist without execution of justice? We currently define that as punishing the guilty. But is that the only way?
I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man I've met.
