EU parliament eases road for hydrogen cars tells that the European Union is defining technical specifications for hydrogen cars. The idea is to have a consistent set of specifications and regulations among the 27 member nations that will encourage and boost hydrogen car design and manufacture in the European Union. The new specifications allow either fuel cell or direct hydrogen-combustion engines. An example of a fuel cell vehicle is the Chevrolet Equinox. An example of a hydrogen combustion vehicle is the Mazda RX-8.
EU lawmakers approve rules for hydrogen cars tells that 14% of Europe's CO2 is produced by automobiles. It also explains that environmentalists are understandably worried that energy producers might choose environmentally dangerous hydrogen generation through steam reforming instead of through electrolysis or some of the new emerging technologies.
As I have noted in some other technology issues such as nuclear power plants, Germany seems to be contra-hydrogen as told in Fuel Cells Not Exciting Car Makers in Germany. The Germans seem to lean toward the hydrogen fuel cell, but do not think it will mature until after 2020. The German engineers and manufacturers see multiple problems with hydrogen-powered vehicles, not the least of which is the generation and distribution of hydrogen. There is also concern about safety, which echoes history's Hindenberg disaster.
I have become a believer in the hydrogen economy. I also think it will occur much before 2020, perhaps by 2013. Peak oil has occurred. We have been fortunate that it happened earlier than later, which allows us the opportunity to retool our energy use while petroleum, albeit at high prices, is still available. It coincides with a greening environmental awareness and the hydrogen economy allows us to simultaneously reduce dependence upon foreign energy suppliers and reduce CO2 emissions.
I think they are going in the direction with pushing for the hydrogen vehicles. That is where the world has to go.
